Anyone aged 65 or older, or under 65 with an age-related illness such as dementia or cerebrovascular disease, can apply to the National Health Insurance Service for long-term care recognition. Once the Grading Committee assigns a care grade (Grade 1 to 5, or a cognitive support grade), a significant portion of the cost of in-home services - visiting care, visiting bathing, day/night care (in-home benefits) - or admission to a care facility (facility benefits) is covered. Families often only apply after a parent's mobility suddenly declines.
